Why jump rope consistency is key to progress and confidence

This might sound like an obvious thing to say, but one thing I’ve learned throughout my jump rope journey is that the more you jump, the easier it gets.

And I don’t just mean that the skills get easier the more you train.

Being consistent with your jump rope practice will help with every aspect of your progress in the sport: both physically, and mentally.

Getting into a good routine and completing regular sessions will help you:

  • Feel more comfortable with the rope itself.
  • Feel less worried about hitting yourself (and hurting yourself).
  • Improve your rhythm and coordination.
  • Remember skills, movements and choreos better.
  • Become more able to identify mistakes or issues with your form.

Even now, I often find that if I don’t do a complex skill for a while, when I do go back to it, it feels easier than the last time I tried – because I’m generally more confident and comfortable in what I’m doing.

How to improve jump rope consistency without burning out

You don’t have to keep plugging away at one movement over and over again, getting more and more frustrated.

That’s not what consistency is about: it’s about generally keeping the feel for the rope, practising regularly to keep your body rhythmic and reactive, and maintaining your confidence.

“Consistency” doesn’t just mean flogging yourself until you get something right and being tunnel-visioned to improve one skill.

So if you are really struggling with one particular movement right now, move away from it and try other skills. Chances are, when you try said troublesome movement again, you’ll be more comfortable, more confident, and have better rhythm and form. Because you’ve stayed consistent in other areas of your training!

Jump rope consistency doesn’t mean jumping every day

As tempting as it is, jumping every day is a sure-fire way to injure yourself. And that’s not going to do anything for your consistency!

Try to do something jump rope-related as regularly as you can. For beginners, 3-4 days per week is a great number to aim for.

And remember, that doesn’t mean you have to be physically jumping on all those days.

How to get better at jump rope even on rest days

Your body needs rest and recovery; in fact, it’s just as important as your training sessions.

A lot of people I speak to worry that having days off will hinder their progress, but jump rope is a sport where you can improve even when you’re not training at max capacity!

You can break movements down into drills a couple of times a week and still make amazing progress.

The rest day workouts in the Fancy Feats app were designed exactly for this purpose: to help you stay consistent and continue improving even when you’re not jumping.

Consistency is crucial to jump rope success

Consistency is everything when it comes to improving at jump rope. But, as I’ve said, it’s not just about jumping every day: it’s about staying consistent with your training as a whole, whether that’s through drills, learning new skills, or doing rest day workouts.

Keep pushing forward, and soon, you’ll see the progress you’ve been working toward.

And, if you’re still finding it difficult to improve your jump rope consistency, then it’s worthwhile considering how to boost your jump rope motivation.
