You all know I’m a big fan of jump rope footwork skills.
I love how versatile they are and that they make it look like you’re shuffle-dancing with your rope.
And while I pretty much love every footwork movement, I do have some faves which I use in loads of my combos and choreos.
Let’s take a look at a few of them.
The Boxer Step is one of my favourite-ever jump rope footwork skills because it’s so efficient. It teaches you to be light on your feet and gives you the perfect foundation for learning more complex movements, so it can really help you improve your jump rope footwork.

The Heel Shuffle is one of my go-to footwork skills because it’s so versatile and adaptable.
Plus, it looks cool – especially when you’re able to do it super fast!
This movement combines heel taps and high knees so you’ll need to master those before you give it a go.

Side steps are super fun to do. I love incorporating them into my routines, and I always recommend them when people are learning jump rope footwork!
In this movement, you jump to one side while tapping your opposite heel on the ground.
My top tip for mastering side steps is to keep your weight on your back foot and not through the foot which is tapping on the floor.

X-motions are a really fun way to spice up your side straddles.
Rather than doing a basic bounce between the regular side straddle movement, you cross your feet over in an ‘X’ position.
Make sure you practise these with both feet going in front in the cross position!

With footwork skills especially, it’s often much easier to work out the movement once you’ve seen someone else doing it.
That’s why I’ve got step-by-step video tutorials for these and loads of other jump rope footwork skills on the Fancy Feats app!
The best thing to do to start with is to put down your rope and practise moving your feet without jumping.
But once you can do that, you’ll be well on your way to ticking these off.
So, which one are you going to try first?
