You might think that I, and other pro jump ropers, learn jump rope skills really fast. That we can just pick a skill to learn, grab our rope and away we go – it’s right first time.
But I promise you, that’s not the case.
I get frustrated when I can’t master something, just like everyone else – I’ve just learned from experience how to manage it!
So, try these tips if you’re feeling the same and have been struggling to learn a particular skill, movement, or combo.
Press ‘record’ on your phone and camera as soon as you start your session.
Many people find it takes longer to master a jump rope skill than they’d like because they’ve spent a whole practice doing something wrong and haven’t realised it.
Film each attempt, and watch it back immediately (just be careful not to spend too much time analysing and getting cold!).
That way, you’ll spot the issues straight away – and get better at jump rope faster.

Learning jump rope skills can be really tiring for both your body and brain.
The more tired you get, the worse your form becomes, which makes learning technical jump rope movements even harder.
When you get to this stage, it’s important to step back and take a breather.
But one of the great things about learning jump rope is that many of the skills can be drilled in a non-impact way, so you can still make great progress even if you’re not jumping flat out.
So grab a drink, regain your composure, and browse through the Fancy Feats app, where I’ve broken down each skill into steps. Many of the drills focus on arm movements and are much less taxing on your body than leg drills, so you can try some of those while giving your body (and your mind) a rest.
Did you know you can also change the playback speed on the Fancy Feats app?
On all of my tutorial videos, you can click the screen to pause, play, and scrub back and forth. You’ll also see three little dots in the bottom right corner. Click them to make me go slower (or faster!).
If you select 0.5, the tutorial will play at half speed, giving you that little extra time to watch the movements and compare them to your own.
I also include super slow-mo breakdowns in all tutorials, so there are loads of ways to support you in learning jump rope skills more effectively.
Improving your jump rope skills isn’t about nailing everything in one go. It’s about patience, consistency, and gradual improvements through ticking the skills off in the right order.
And that’s exactly why I built Fancy Feats! So jump in, choose a skill or combo to focus on, and use these tips to guide your sessions. You'll soon be learning jump rope skills faster than ever before!
