One of the things I love most about jump rope is the community.
From Instagram to YouTube to my free Facebook group, there are thousands and thousands of people all over the world sharing jump rope videos, tips and tricks online daily. Which is great!
But if you’re new to jump rope, I can understand how seeing people who are so much further along in their journey than you are might be a bit disheartening.
Watching people who seem to be progressing quicker than you are can make you feel like you’re doing something wrong. Or like you’re not good enough.
I felt the same.
But these tips really helped me build jump rope confidence – and I think they might help you, too!
If you enjoy watching expert jump ropers do their thing, use their content as inspiration – not a point for comparison!
We’re all at different stages in our jump rope journey, and it’s important to remember that many people like me do this for a living.

Filming yourself jumping is so important.
It’s sometimes difficult to pick up on little improvements when you're practising. So, recording yourself means you can visually track your jump rope progress to see the gains you’ve made.
You don’t have to share these videos with anyone if you don’t want to, but they will help you see how far you’ve come and help build your jump rope confidence.
There are some basic skills which everyone needs to nail down when learning jump rope.
And learning lots of individual skills is great.
But sometimes, focusing on combos is the way to go if you need a confidence boost.
Combos increase your rope awareness, and mastering them helps you to move and flow better.
Pick a combo that includes skills you can already do (there are loads to choose from on the Fancy Feats app!). Give yourself a few weeks to learn it, and enjoy the feeling of success when you nail it.
You might even find that any previous skills you’ve been struggling with become easier, too!

Fixating on one or two people who are amazing jump ropers can sometimes mean you try to copy them.
But I truly believe that we should be inspired by multiple people. I take inspiration from other jump ropers and people in the shuffle and dance communities. And then I add my own flavour to what they’re doing!
So, when I perform my skills, they look slightly different to someone else doing the same movement because I’ve developed my own nuances.
Finding your jump rope style can take a bit of trial and error, but spend some time working out what feels right to you.
And once you’ve found it, be happy with it, and own it. Your jump rope will instantly feel more natural, and you’ll be full of confidence.
Building jump rope confidence doesn’t happen overnight. But with patience, practise, and the right mindset, you’ll soon feel ready to take on any jump rope challenge which you decide to tackle!
Whether it’s filming your sessions, experimenting with combos, or stopping comparing yourself to those you see jumping online, every small step will help you improve your mindset.
So if you’ve ever wondered how to become more confident at jump rope, the answer is simple: keep showing up, be patient and let your personal style shine through. You’ve got this!
